Operational magnitude of completeness maps for the netherlands

Dataset

Description

This dataset describes the operational magnitude of completeness of the seismic network in the Netherlands. The main seismic-network assessment parameter is magnitude of completeness, which has been computed over a grid covering the Netherlands. This parameter describes the spatial variation of the minimum magnitude for which almost every earthquake can be located. The operational automatic detection system at KNMI requires an earthquake signal to be detected on at least six sensors. For selected borehole stations, detection is done at multiple sensors to yield a trigger with less than 6 stations. Moreover, this automatic detection is supplemented by three coincidence triggers: in South Holland, in Friesland and in Limburg. Each coincidence trigger gives a trigger if a signal is simultaneously detected on at least 3 sensors. In addition, multiple levels of selected borehole stations have been included. Detection has been modeled using expected signal-to-noise levels. Noise levels are the actually recorded noise levels at stations from the Netherlands seismic network, and stations just across the border in Belgium and Germany. The signal levels have been modeled for sources at 3 km depth, using a calibrated P-wave ground-motion prediction equation.
